So after 2 years of " Topsy - Turvey Tomato " ads at 3 A.M. ........ I bit .
I planted an Upside Down Tomato tonight.
It's a pain in the ass, and after I finished watering the transplant, I asked myself. " Why did I do this ? " It's a " Bush Goliath ", from Home Depot. $3.50 each, and a new bucket and lid for $2.34 and $0.98 ea. Plus 5 gallons of soil made by me, (the best part of the deal). After some thought I see the point of this ......... no cage, because tomatoes need to stay off the ground. A few weeks in the greenhouse, and outside she goes, if I can figure out how to move 5 gallons of wet soil, & not crush the " Bush Goliath ".

I have a similar plan on the drawing board using an old 5G paint bucket, but with 4 even spaced side holes. Ain't doing much of anything until this f..ing weather breaks warm and looks to stay warm for a while. I can see why there's a bunch of people trying to sell greenhouse plans ..construction around the area. This cold dampness(low 40s overnite)is getting real old for this time of year. I think I've already loss my corn starts, gotta redo em.

Get yourself a greenhouse, even a small one like mine (7 X 14), will grow more than enough for 4 people.
The best part is just walking into them, when you've had a bad day. Or the world is having a bad day.

Your plan is sound, ( 4 holes in the sides ). The plant in the bottom is really difficult to work.
I am considering one of those PVC/plastic sheeting jobs @ 8' x 20' for next year. I may have to make a similar hoop covering this year if the weather doesn't break. We're forecasted in the mid 30s (early am) this week. I have a garage that I can incubate seedlings with lighting but you can't grow corn in pots :-) It's a bitch.
